Interview by Carl Marsh - July 2014

Hi Brian, as you will know, I interview successful and motivated role models like yourself, to help me get the message out that reading is important. Thanks for that and if you could, can you say why you feel it is important that people should read more?
I feel that people should read more because it helps you learn, and it also takes you to another place where your mind gets to interpret things on its own. My wife and I started our kids reading at a very young age, and when my daughter Shayla was in middle school she was already reading at a college level! Its so important to start them reading at a young age! What is your favourite book and why? I like anything culinary and cooking, and I love The Waldorf Astoria Cook book! It has amazing recipes and a lot of historical back stories to how they were created, history about the hotel and New York City. Are you reading anything at the moment? Actually I’m currently working on my first cookbook, so I go back to it and read it to make sure the content is exactly what I want! It’s a pretty big book, so I want to make sure the readers are satisfied. With your first book, how difficult did you find it coming up with such great recipes, and to make your recipe book stand out? There was a lot of trial and error and recipe testing. It’s a baking book, but I wanted it to be savory and sweet in the book, not just sweet concoctions. That is how I set myself apart from the other contestants on The American Baking Competition, taking something you would normally think as sweet and making it savoury, and it paid off. That is exactly what I’m doing with my book “Bake Off”, and I think the readers will enjoy it! Can you tell me about your daily routine since winning America's Top baker in 2013? Well I’m always in the kitchen whipping up something! But since I won, I have been traveling all over the country and also internationally, doing speaking engagements and cooking demos on live TV. I've also been donating my time to many local charities, judging cooking contests, conducting cooking and baking classes, and working on my book that I won as part of the prize package! What advice can you offer to anyone that is wanting to do what you did/do to get where you are right now? Just to follow your passion everyday and never give up! I have a favorite saying and I stand by it everyday, and its how I won the competition, “You Will…When you Believe”!!! Also, follow your path, not others, and don’t look at what others are doing, its your journey. What do the next 12 months hold for you? I’m doing a presale tour with my book and making recipes on TV, so people can get an idea of what recipes are in the book before they purchase it. I’m also doing interviews and speaking engagements around the country. Your life so far has been a journey, so, what motivates you, Brian Emmett to be such a dedicated and driven person? I have always been a super positive person and one that never gives up. I always try to look at the BIG picture and then in my head make a plan of attack on how I am going to get there. The path doesn’t always lead you exactly where you want…so to get there you need to keep painting that door until the right person knocks!!! Last question, "if you could be an animal, what would it be and why?" I would be a dolphin because they are highly intelligent, social and they always have a smile on their face, just like me!!! Thanks Brian, I really enjoyed talking with you, and I cannot wait to see your cook book! Carl Thanks so much I really enjoyed the interview! Brian @BrianEmmettBake |
