Interview by Carl Marsh - July 2014 |
Hi Evette,
thanks for spending some of your valuable time doing this interview. It's my pleasure to spend time with you! As you are currently at Comic Con in San Diego, I know it is because of your latest project Dark Prophet. Can you let my readers know all about Dark Prophet? During this amazing event, where I have the honour of premiering the DARK PROPHET comic book. Dark Prophet is a present day Sci-Fi Action Thriller about gifted music student, Dai Shepherd, who discovers top secrets hidden in the binary codes of songs, then finds himself framed for his girlfriend’s murder. To find her killer and save civilization, Dai must stop Black Box, the rogue Intel agency that planted the secrets, from triggering the cyber-intelligence takeover of the planet. Think The Matrix meets 24, and of today’s Top Secret Intelligence Leaks. Why should my readers get behind Dark Prophet? DARK PROPHET is a timely story that people connect to on a universal level. DARK PROPHET echoes daily sentiments such as people losing their civil liberties because of Intel Agencies, such as the NSA listening in on their calls. DARK PROPHET is a good vs. evil story; a David vs. Goliath story; and about the use and abuse of technology in our daily lives. In addition, most people connect with music on a very deep level. The idea of hidden text messages encrypted in our music is one that fascinates people, especially because it’s entirely possible. What do you hope to get out of Comic Con with Dark Prophet? The comic book is another media format in which the DARK PROPHET story is told. I’m hoping comic book fans will connect to the story, characters and overall franchise. How did the project Dark Prophet come to be, when did the idea come to you? The idea came to be while I was working on a Black Sabbath branded entertainment project, which included the creation of a website that featured Black Sabbath branded clothing, jewellery music, art and an animated story. The site and project revolved around a story based on a Black Sabbath myth. While I was designing the music player, I was struck with the recollection that the pure science of music is math. Everything about music is mathematical. With that I began asking myself a series of what if questions. Question like… Since the pure science of music is math, what if there were encrypted messages in the math—and what if those messages were encrypted by a covert government agency—and what if a musical genius discovered the messages, what would happen then? This was the birth of the DARK PROPHET story. Was the project a long one to complete, and were there any pitfalls in production? I’ve been developing the DARK PROPHET multiplatfom story world and media for two years. Thus far, I’ve created the digital series, three plus original branded songs, the comic book, a mobile app and merchandising. We go into production on original social media shows in August. These are 11 scripted and unscripted shows revolving around the DARK PROPHET world that will premiere on social media platforms. I know you are an avid reader, so what type of books do you like to read, and what is your favourite book, and why? This is almost as hard as asking, what’s my favorite film. It’s difficult to choose one. My favorite genres are action orientated stories in the areas of crime, sic-fi, thriller, espionage, fantasy. Despite the genre, real human drama and relationships must be at the heart of the story. Human aspirations, struggles, conflicts and triumphs are what I’m most drawn to, in any storytelling format. Some of my favorite books are short stories by O. Henry and Edgar Allan Poe. Short stories by these authors inspired me to start writing. With reading, I am keen to inspire many more to read through this website, so what message would you give to inspire more to read? I think the more you read, the more you want to write—and the more you write, the more you want to read. Reading is as natural as breathing. There are so many stories and worlds waiting to be explored. I suggest young readers begin reading books on subjects they’re interested in. In addition, once a reader discovers his/her favorite authors, to read as much of the authors worlds as possible. I also encourage readers to read subjects that inspire their creativity. An inspired creative mind makes magic happen in life. Now that Dark Prophet is 'out there', what do you hope to have done, or be doing over the next 12 months? I’m in the process of packaging the one-hour series to pitch to the networks. I’m also packing two other shows as well. I believe I’ll be showrunning one to two shows by next year. If I could ask about yourself, how did you get into your field of work, in case any readers want to follow in your footsteps? My entire existence has been about visual storytelling. I came out of the womb drawing and painting. That lead me to graphic design, interactive design and writing short stories, which I wanted to direct and produce. That lead me to studying directing at NYU Tisch School of the arts. At Tisch, I fell in love with the screenwriting format. I’ve been writing, directing and creating multiplatform storytelling content ever since. In L.A., I earned my MFA form UCLA for screenwriting and television showrunning. I utilize and combine all of my storytelling skills on every project. From writing, directing, producing, designing, creating games, creating technologies and more. I would like to ask you Evette, if you could be an animal, what would it be and why? I’m a Leo and have always felt like a lioness. I’m queen of my domain and take care of and am loyal to everyone in my life and team. It’s how I roll. ;) All the best with Dark Prophet and the success it will bring, Carl Thank you so much! I’m honoured to have answered your questions. Evette @HearTheWarning |
