Take The Chance

Interview by Carl Marsh - September 2014 |
Hello to you both, Jed and Nathan. So to start with then, how did you guys meet?
We met when I (Nathan) moved from Nova Scotia to New Brunswick in grade 3, although in England you would call it year three. We ended up in the same class and then we went on to play in opposing teams in hockey. Whilst you have been in the UK, what have you been doing? Nathan - We’ve just got back from Manchester this morning actually, and we've been in the recording studio for the last three days. We also did a photo shoot, we've met with a few press companies, which was very cool, and we played at a showcase here in London, that was fun. When are you going back to Canada? We go back to Canada on the 15th September but before that we are on a talk show. We also have a few meetings with our management team. And we are also going to do a bit of travelling around Europe, whilst we continue to work on the songs that we have been writing in the last few days. As this is a website to inspire more to read, can you both tell me what is your favourite book, and why? Nathan - Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. It's just one of those books that made me think about everything in life. I couldn't put it down. Basically I read it over two days, as it is such a pretty strong book. Jed - Mine was all of the “Brian’s Saga” series by Gary Paulson, I read them all in one go. To be honest, at school I neglected books but those books were the first ones which made me really enjoy reading. With the first book in that series, I was like wow! I can actually really enjoy reading, and I just didn't want to put it down. I didn't want to do anything else such as watch movies, I just wanted to read that book. It just kept me on my toes somehow and I didn't understand why, because I was never really attached to a book like that before. Once I finished that first book, I just then read the whole series! Why is reading important to the both of you? Jed - it's important to me because it gets my brain working especially with being a songwriter, you've always got to keep your vocabulary up. By reading and learning lots of different words, it also helps the lyrics flow better whilst writing, and also when singing. I think on another note though, it's just good to gain knowledge as nowadays, there is so much information thrown at you from the TV, the internet and sometimes it's not always good information. I always find that you can use a book as a reliable source of information. In both of your lives, who has been your role models, such as who has inspired you the most? Jed - I think this goes for all young teenage boys, it's looking up at your Dad primarily. If I was to say out of the music industry, the role model for me is a guy called Alex Gaskarth, he plays in a band called All Time Low. They are from Baltimore, Maryland in the USA. I have literally everything they've ever done. I have followed every one of their tours, I know everything that they've done. So when they put out a live DVD one time, that was the turning point which made me realise like, holy crap! that this is what I want to do for a living. So I kind of look up to him the most. Me. Have you ever met him? Jed. Twice. That's amazing, as it's such a pleasure to hear that you've met your role model. And what about you Nathan? Nathan - I share the same passion for that band. And especially my Dad too, when growing up. There is another guy I sort of take inspiration from, and that is Josh Ramsay who is in a band called Mariana's Trench. He also produced/co-wrote the song by Carley Ray Jepson called Call Me Maybe. He is not just the frontman of the band but he is talented in so many different musical areas, and 'wears' so many hats Where do you see yourselves in the next 12 months? Nathan - It's really hard to say because things can just pop up out of the blue. People can expect a lot of new music though. We will be trying to get some of our music on Canadian radio, a few music videos planned, but the one most important thing is that we get to travel. We want to have enough songs to go on tour and just we just want to travel all over the world, seeing as many places as we possibly can, whilst playing our music. So its not just about the fame and money, it’s about meeting people, travelling and just getting your music out there? Both - Yes, it's unreal that we are even in London at this time, as a month ago, we did not know we would be here, but now, we are just ready to travel to more places, meet more wonderful people, and do what we love. If you could be an animal what would it be and why? Just let your imagination run as if you're writing it in a book, so your fans can get to understand how your brains work. Jed. I don't think our fans would really want to know how our brains work (both laughing)! Wow! Its cool to get such a unique question as normally you just get the generic ones, but I applaud you for coming up with these different questions! I'm very happy you have asked them. I've always been drawn to Lions, because they are such a powerful animal and they can lead. And towards their family they are ever so protective, which is what I am. Nathan - I was going to go with a penguin because I really like penguins. And I think the fans know that, because they are funny looking and I am (kind of) funny looking. They walk a little funny and I (kind of) have a funny walk too! And they dress up all the time and always have the Tux on, and I like them. So yes, I would be a penguin! Both - Canadians love their animals. What message would you like to say to your fans. Jed, again this is pretty generic and it all comes back to saying thank you. Literally we wouldn't be here, you know we wouldn't even be in London if it wasn't for you, our fans. So thank you for supporting us and we will try to do our best to please you, in the future, (both laughing). We are just happy that they can join us on this journey as wherever we go, our fans can come with us because we've all got social media, so we can send them photos/chat/etc... So it's all just like a big family moving around the world. Do you have any questions for me? Jed - ok, I’m going to flip this around and give you the animal question. (All laughing) - I’m the interviewer now, so what animal would you be? I would be a house cat as they get pampered on, get to rule the house, are dedicated; you guys have put me on the spot! So they are quite unique, they are all individuals and I also think I am quite unique myself. So I think that is probably the best answer I can give. I hope that is a good enough answer? Both - thats the best answer we have ever got! Maybe the first one from such a question, but still the best! Me - and maybe the last! Thanks to you both Nathan and Jed, it’s been a real treat. Thanks, Carl Jed/Nathan - Thanks Carl for having us. @TTCofficial Photos Credited to: Dark Star Photo Oxyte Photo |
